This article is a praise song to my grandmothers and also the other wonderful maternal other mothers who had a hand in birthing me. It extends the topic of my theoretical dissertation, which focuses on “other mothers” as women in the community who aren’t biological mothers but were informally-assigned to take care of others’ children. Other mothers are multicultural phenomena but In the Black community, this culturally- adaptive family form existed in pre-colonial times. My research suggests that other mothers (actual, imagined and ancestral) shape our lived experience.
